Your donation can make a difference.

We’re so grateful for the support we have received from the community. Sorrel Leaf Healing Center is closer to our opening date than we ever have been but we still have work to do.

Contribute to our Furniture & Fixtures campaign so we can outfit the new center and provide for our future residents a warm, safe, non-clinical environment.

Our Programs

Mobile Crisis Response

Sorrel Leaf Healing Center’s Mobile Crisis Response program provides intensive, real-time therapy and  case management throughout Humboldt County to minors ages 7-17 experiencing a need for higher level of care than a traditional outpatient program.

Our team can intervene directly in homes and  community settings to stabilize crises, support youth and families, and prevent unnecessary  hospitalization or residential placement whenever possible.

Residential Treatment

Sorrel Leaf Healing Center’s crisis residential program is for youth ages 7 to 17 who experience a severe mental health crisis placing them at risk for psychiatric hospitalization, offering 24/7 trained staff to support comprehensive care for short-term stabilization.

Our new facility is located on a 13-acre farm in Eureka offering daily connection to land, self, and community to support embodied healing and connection.

After Crisis Support

Sorrel Leaf Healing Center provides a structured outpatient  After Crisis Care program.

This program, lasting 3 to 6 months on average, supports youth and their families as they  transition from intensive crisis care back into daily life.

Services include individual therapy,  family therapy, case management, and advocacy with long term providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • ACE stands for Adverse Childhood Experience, it is a screening tool which measures childhood trauma exposure and can be used to assess the risk of developing long-term health problems.

Three types of ACE’s: abuse, neglect and household dysfunction are the main categories in which questions are grouped to create a final score. High ACE scores are not a guarantee of future health risks by any means, but the higher the ACE score, the higher likelihood that a child can develop unhealthy and unsafe behaviors as an adult. Read more about the long-term studies conducted by the CDC on the behavioral risk factor surveillance system ACE data.

  • The residential program offers short-term care that usually lasts for two to ten days depending on the client’s medical necessity need and upon authorization of its payor (private insurance, MediCal or private pay). We also support all of our residential clients after their stay with our longer term care after crisis care program.

  • To be admitted into one of our programs, a youth must first be evaluated by a physician at a hospital or by a qualified mental health professional and determined to be experiencing a mental health crisis. The youth and their legal guardian must agree to services before a referral can be made.

For youth with Medi Cal insurance, referrals must be authorized through the Behavioral Health team at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in the youth’s county of residence before being sent to Sorrel Leaf.

For youth with private insurance, families should first confirm that Sorrel Leaf is in network with their insurance provider before admission.

Youth using private pay and not going through insurance may be referred directly to services after an evaluation by a physician or qualified mental health professional.

See our Family & Providers Resources page for more information on the process prior, during and after the referral is made.

  • At Sorrel Leaf, we combine a thoughtful, human-centered approach with trauma informed, holistic care to ensure impactful care can be provided in a non-clinical setting.

Our purpose is to help our clients heal with practices rooted in community and compassion.

We combine things like outdoor learning activities, animal husbandry with more traditional talk therapies to create a holistic approach to healing.

  • Program costs are determined by your insurance provider. If services are approved and determined to be appropriate, billing will be processed through the youth’s insurance provider or directly with the youth’s legal guardian for private pay services.

At this time, we accept private pay, and private insurance as well as MediCal.

Family Matters

Trauma can have a lasting impact on your loved ones, but taking the first step towards healing requires dedication from everyone, not just the individual experiencing crisis.

There are many ways that a family can start to heal after a loved one has experienced a traumatic event, and many times that requires patience, care and understanding.
