  • Youth Crisis Support (YCS) is a mobile response team to address youth crisis events at home or in the community. Our mobile support lasts from three to six weeks and allows for families and youth to receive support without disrupting day to day activities.

  • The Children’s Crisis Residential Program (CCRP) is a 13 acre facility in Eureka that offers residential 24/7 care for more extreme cases for youths ages 7-17 experiencing crisis.

We blend land-based care with trauma informed care to ensure our most vulnerable are cared for in a healthy and nurturing environment.

  • After residential care, Sorrel Leaf offers After Crisis Care support for three to six months to ensure lasting progress for youth who have graduated from the residential center as well as remote sessions for youth outside of Humboldt County.

The Referral Process

Crisis at Home, School or in the Community

A youth or child is experiencing a behavioral health crisis that places them at risk for psychiatric hospitalization or out-of-home placement.

Healthcare Provider Routes to Sorrel Leaf’s Services

If the youth in crisis meets criteria for the mobile crisis program, an appointment is made to conduct the intake and obtain written authorization.

If the youth meets criteria for the Children’s Crisis Residential Program (CCRP), they would be routed to Sorrel Leaf by the healthcare provider and authorization provider to figure out if there is a bed available and that the youth is the best fit for the residential center prior to admission.

Necessary authorizations from the payor, legal guardian(s) and youth would also be collected to initiate care.

Call Help

911 and the legal guardian would be called depending on the severity of the case.

The youth would either be transported to the ER if it is safe to do so by the legal guardian, by ambulance if there is immediate danger, or the youth would be evaluated on site depending on the risk and time of day.

The Healing Journey Begins

For private pay youth, if an evaluation has not yet been conducted, upon arrival at Sorrel Leaf’s Children’s Crisis Residential Program (CCRP), the youth would be evaluated for admission, and if medical necessity is established, they would be admitted into the residential program after consenting to treatment.

Determine the Track

Before a referral to Sorrel Leaf, insurance is checked to determine what authorization is needed when insurance will be used. This step is not required for private pay.

For Medi Cal
The legal guardian should speak with the evaluating clinician and request a referral if criteria for services are met.

For Private Insurance
Families should confirm Sorrel Leaf is in network with their plan. If in network or choosing private pay, they may contact Sorrel Leaf directly to arrange services.

Evaluate

Based on the results of the evaluation, the youth in crisis will be connected to the most appropriate level of care. Depending on the severity of the situation, a specialist may recommend psychiatric hospitalization, mobile crisis services through Sorrel Leaf, residential services through Sorrel Leaf, or longer-term outpatient services with another community provider.

If your loved one is experiencing crisis, call your healthcare
provider or 911.

Due to the nature of our program,
we cannot offer help without first evaluating for medical necessity.
